September 2011 (Vienna, VA) – The EPA is proud to announce that 25% of single-family homes built in 2010, up 4% from 2009, earned EPA’s Energy Star. The EPA supports American home buyers who invest in high performing homes; homes which will save the family money on energy bills and also help protect and promote a healthy environment. Since the EPA started applying the Energy Star label, to heating and cooling units located in residential homes, 1.2 million new homes haves earned the Energy Star label. This is the equivalent of avoiding greenhouse gas emissions from more than 450,000 vehicles and has surmounted to savings of nearly $350 million on utility bills. In 2010, sixteen states had a market share of 25% or higher Energy Star qualified homes. The environmentally friendly states include Arizona, Colorado, Delaware, Hawaii, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, Ohio, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah and Vermont.
